Dr. Kumar grew up in Huntley, IL, northwest of Chicago, and attended grade school and high school there. He received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Illinois in 1997, and his Doctor of Optometry degree from the Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, TN in 2002. Dr. Kumar began his clinical training with the Navy at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center in Chicago, IL, where treatment and management of ocular disease was emphasized. As an intern in a private practice in Reston, VA, he received training in contact lens fitting and surgical co-management. Prior to opening his private eye care practice in 2005, he did relief work at several eye care practices in the Dallas/Ft. Worth metroplex. In the same year, he became a certified optometric glaucoma specialist, enabling him to diagnose and treat glaucoma, and prescribe oral medications for the treatment and management of eye disease. In addition to providing primary eye care to patients of all ages, Dr. Kumar offers specialty eye care services which include:
- advanced treatments for allergy eyes and dry eyes, including punctual plug therapy (eye plugs), and amniotic membrane therapy
- advanced diagnosis and treatment of glaucoma
- management of diabetic eye disease
- geriatric eye care
- specialty contact lens fitting for keratoconus, post cornea transplants, and high astigmatism.
- surgical co-management of cataract surgery, pterygium surgery, and laser vision correction
Dr. Kumar is also certified to prescribe specialty contact lenses for the temporary reduction of near-sightedness. This non-surgical procedure, known as orthokeratology, or corneal refractive therapy, corrects certain amounts of near-sightedness and astigmatism, reducing an individual’s dependence on corrective lenses. And the procedure is completely reversible, unlike traditional laser surgery! Dr. Kumar received LASIK surgery in 2002 to correct a prescription of -9.00 in both eyes, so he is very knowledgable about the risks and benefits of laser eye surgery, and serves as a great resource to patients considering LASIK vision correction. Professionally, Dr. Kumar is a member of the Dallas County Optometric Society, Northeast Texas Optometric Society, Texas Optometric Association, and American Optometric Association. He serves as an adjunct professor and clinical instructor for three optometry schools: University of Incarnate Word – Rosenberg School of Optometry in San Antonio, TX, Midwestern University College of Optometry in Downers Grove, IL and the Rocky Mountain University School of Optometry in Provo, UT. He is also an active member Dallas-Forth Worth Indian Lions Club. He is happily married, and in his spare time, enjoys weightlifting, organic gardening, and spending time with his wife, Setal, a family practice physician, and twin sons, Amit and Dev, both of whom keep Dr. Kumar busy with soccer, band, and cross country. Dr Kumar lives with his family in Sunnyvale, TX, and is fluent in both English and Spanish.
